the gift.

there was once a prince.
who wanted nothing else in the world but to be love a princess and be loved in return.
one day, a wizard crossed his path and announced to the prince that it was time.

the gift was handed to him
in it, the promise of happiness, for as long as he knew how to care for the gift.
the shell of the gift was hard and smooth - cold and warm to touch, depending on his moods.
it was the size of a dinosaur egg, and in it - mysteries much deep.
its weight changed, but it was never too heavy for him to carry around with him,
and it gave off the smell of spring and chocolate.
he was promised that if he opened the gift - out would come his destiny,
but,
he was warned:
this particular gift was not easy to open.
he was instructed to be gentle and patient and then was sent off. at first, the prince was clearly disappointed, for he had hoped on a path to his princess - but soon enough, the gift began to intrigue him.

for days he marvelled at it - initially attracted by its surface, he touched the gift gently - and made sure it never left its side.
he showed the gift to all his friends, but would refuse to let anyone else get too close.
he dropped the gift once, his heart left his chest and to his astonishment the gift was alright - there was no major damage.
soon, a couple of weeks and some minor dents afterwards, the novelty of the gift began to wear off.
he never let anyone else near the gift, but, regardless of what he tried the gift would not seem to open for him.
once, he found himself unable to respond as to what the gift really was - when a stranger approached him, clearly enthralled by it.
jealousy and rage blew up inside the young man - and once in the privacy of the castle he yelled at the gift, ordering it to come out.
the gift began to change colour.
excited and enthralled,
he continued to yell, his profanities increased in vulgarity:
and the gift began to change shape.
he lifted the gift and in fit of fury swung it across the room.
and the gift opened.
out crawled the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.
in the shape of a woman, with eyes as deep as the ocean, her tears pierced his soul - as she looked upon him with remorse and hatred.
I am your kindred soul, she whispered. the one that could have brought you happiness if you were patient and kind to me. the one you were supposed to care for... but you couldnt.
she began to disappear. and he saw flashes of the life that was not his, and his heart began to tear.
he can be found now. writing love letters in the sand, the remains of his gift, open - dead, at his side.
