In the Land of Dreams there lived many creatures, some more odd than others, some peculiar but only by comparison. Here, lions play with baby mice that are the size of houses. Here, jazz musicians play in forests - their audience children, dancing to colours made of the symphony's sad conquest.
In the Land of Dreams there are many rooms and time becomes a play thing. Age speeds up, and slows down at the liking of your imagination: awoken only by your sleep.
The rooms are many different colours, and all connect - hazily - reflections of dreams that enable one to escape into a reality more true and intertwined with the secrets of our soul.
In the Land of Dreams, pretence is lost, and we drop the masks worn daily. Becoming what we know we should be, could be, if the worlds outside the Land of Dreams were not so cruel.
It is in this Land that the old man from the corner store becomes a child flying kites of different colours, surrounded by aunts, his grandchildren, and smells of his native country.
It is in this Land, where dogs become large enough to chase cars, and squirrels grow wings to reach branches at rates that make most sense ... That something quite peculiar occurred.
It happened quite suddenly and no one expected it, or were we quite ready to deal with its consequences.
At exactly the same time, but not together, and much later than one would anticipate (bedtime for this part of the world had expired 5 hours earlier... But many that come from the Land of Insomniacs tend to confuse a normal bedtime) the entrance of two souls into the Land of Dreams left everyone shell-shocked. See, usually, when one falls asleep one of three things can occur: either your essence goes into a state of sobriety - nothingness if u will, or travels into one of Two Lands: The Land of Things that are Terrifying or The Land of Dreams.
In both of these lands, masks are shed and you become your true shape. And see, this is where our story becomes interesting... when these two souls entered, independently from one another, lost it seemed, into the Land: nothing happened to their person, their soul. This would mean to say that they had found their true essence in the Lands of Masks and Everyday Life!! Imagine the oddity!
What was even stranger was that the entrance of these souls caused for a great change in the Land of Dreams, usually a place covered in light, where weather, day and night have no meaning. The entrance of this man and woman caused for the lights to go off! Never had such a thing occurred! See this was very different than the sombre state of Sleep, because we were all conscious - the darkness did not resemble Nothingness in the slightest bit...
Not only were we conscious: we were super sensitive to an overwhelming feeling of sadness and coldness that these two souls gave off.
Quickly, those of us that lived permanently in the Land of Dreams (coma patients, lazy souls, babies and koala bears) began to work. Our first job was to find a light switch.
No one knew how the lights went off but the immediate buffle of souls created such a buzz that the electricity between us began to give off sparks. Yet...
The sadness was unbearable.
It was because of this that the Land of Dreams to the North, from which he walked into quickly began to ask him questions about his person. How could someone who had no mask, no pretence, and lived his dream in the Land of Everyday be so sad? They were certain that the answer to this question would bring back the lights, and the lights would take away the feelings of sadness. But, to add to their despair, he remained silent.
In the Land of Dreams to the South, where she had fallen in, there continued to be the running around of souls in search for switches that may cause the light to turn on.
It was in this running around that the Unicorn named Trouble, a dog in the Land of Everyday, recognised the young woman. The Unicorn sighed. How was it possible that she had found him in his Dream room and tainted it with the sadness she emanated in the Land of Everyday?? Oh the frustration!
She tried to stand still but the hustle happening around her made her jump and trip out of the way...
When! A giant ladybug named Priscilla (a teacher bored of shyness that day dreamt of living in gardens in the Land of Everyday) noticed that every time the young woman moved to the North, that is to say, away from her, the lights would flicker. That was the answer! The girl had fallen into the wrong side of sleep!!
Priscilla summoned Trouble, the unicorn and others in the south and began formulating a plan to push the young woman into the North. After much debate over methods of action, it was chosen that she should not be lifted and thrown, but rather pushed gently without informing her of what they were doing and why they were do in so. And so the plan began, with every confused step the girl took (forced of course), the lights would dim in reverse. A sunset at the wrong time of day!
Meanwhile, in the Land of Dreams to the North, souls began to notice the effects on the light and thought that those in the South were trying to rid themselves of their problem, and dump it in the North! How dare they!!
Quickly, those that were early leavers in the land (mostly construction workers in the Land of Everyday) began building a room around the man. They painted the room yellow and placed wheels at the bottom of it. The man did not object, he was simply waiting patiently for morning. While in the room they began to move him down down south.
Soon the two sides collided.
Each began shouting at each other! What a commotion! Mice the size of houses, winged squirrels, Unicorns and Mermaids hopelessly upset: one side pushing the woman, the other rolling over the now caged man.
This would be the first (and only) fight in the history of the Land of Dreams.
No one noticed when the lights turned back on, and no one realized how their hearts got much lighter until one of the babies began to giggle. The sound which had been unheard of in the past 9 minutes, a very long time in dream time, without light was a godsend. Everyone stopped shook hands, hugged, others kissed
And here is where the discussion as to what to do with these two began.
Noone remembers who said it, or if anyone did. No one cares, everyone is just happy it happened. Logically, now that I think of it, it made sense to put them together.
This is how the Door was built. The same construction workers (in the Land of Everyday) that had worked so diligently in creating the room with wheels, made the Door. It was a beautiful thing that no one will forget.
He saw her first, before she did, but his shock and happiness did not allow for him to move fast enough. In the same second she was thrown intothe room, she looked up saw him and before he could brace himself threw her arms around him and locked him in a kiss that lasted the rest of their sleep.
They had spent their days in The Land of Everyday fulfilling every Dream because they could. But Everyday remained empty. They searched for one another, but could never find each.
Who would have thought that all they had to do was sleep!
The Land of Dreams became a much happier place. People began to sleep more (often overpopulating the space) just to see the Two Lost Lovers' Found, and to experience their happiness in each other. Next time you visit us, I invite u to listen closely to the music from a time of simplicity, full women and neat hair styles. Music from a time not our own. The jazzy symphony that surrounds the room provides the soundtrack. You cant see them dancing, they make shadows to hide, relish in each other’s silhouette.
Next time you visit remember this story...
Of the two lost lovers that are now reunited every night, only to continue to search for one another every day.
Fin.
